Pixar’s Black Cat Movie Gets Title, Plot & Director Announced
Pixar COO Pete Docter has revealed the first details for an upcoming original Pixar black cat movie during Annecy.
What is the new Pixar black cat movie?
From the filmmakers behind Luca, Pixar returns to Venice in the upcoming movie Gatto. Directed by Enrico Casarosa, it follows a black cat named Nero in a society that sees black cats as bad luck. Nero is finding his way in Venice, a city filled with canals, even though he can’t swim. Nero gets involved in the seedier aspects of cat society and ends up indebted to a Mafia boss-style cat named Rocco. A street musician named Maya adopts Nero as a stray cat, and they bond because they’re both “black cats” in this society. Their relationship becomes the heart and soul of the film.
This film will see the debut of a slightly new animation style for Pixar. The filmmakers wanted to capture the texture of Venice in a new way, so the animation style will resemble a painting with brushstrokes, all combined with Pixar’s 3D style.
“I can’t wait to share more with you, but we’re very proud of the film,” Docter said. “It’s turning out to be beautiful, heartwarming, and just hilarious.”
Gatto is set to arrive in theaters in summer 2027.
Pixar’s current upcoming slate is a combination of original films and sequels. Next, Pixar has its new movie Elio, arriving in theaters on June 20, 2025. Next, it has another original movie called Hoppers, which will follow a young girl who uses science to enter the body of a beaver and stop a mayor from building a highway that would destroy a beaver community’s habitat. Hoppers will be in theaters on March 6, 2026.
Next, it will release Toy Story 5, which will release on June 19, 2026. Afterwards, Pixar will release Gatto and then give two more sequels currently in the works: Coco 2 and Incredibles 3. The director of the new Incredibles movie was revealed to be Peter Sohn, who previously helmed The Good Dinosaur and Elemental.
