Martin Scorsese’s The Life of Jesus Gets New Details, Will Be in Black and White
Martin Scorsese has offered up more information about his upcoming movie The Life of Jesus, revealing that the film will likely be filmed fully in black and white.
What are the new The Life of Jesus details?
Speaking to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno ahead of receiving a lifetime achievement award at the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily, Scorsese said that he was still working on the movie, but that it would likely be in black and white.
“I’m still working on it, because I’d like to give a more contemporary approach to the project,” Scorsese said. “It takes time because I like that a work of this type is something that requires many years of study and research.”
The legendary director also offered up some of the first details about the movie. Specifically, Scorsese said the film would be around 80 minutes long and follow “Jesus’ core teachings in a way that explores the principles but doesn’t proselytize,” while noting “it’s kind of a film, but it wouldn’t be a straight narrative, it wouldn’t be a documentary, it’d be a combination of things.”
Previously, Scorsese said that his film wouldn’t be a “usual, straight narrative” version of Jesus’ life, saying some of it would be based on the book A Life of Jesus by Shūsaku Endō, which deals with the figure of Jesus and how he pertains to people’s lives nowadays.
Scorsese, who already made The Last Temptation of Christ in 1988, announced he was making a new movie about Jesus Christ in May 2023 after he and his wife Helen Morris privately met with Pope Francis at the Vatican.
