Superman: How Long Kal-El Has Been Active as Man of Steel Revealed
In a recent interview, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn provided an overview of the DCU world that he is trying to establish and revealed the duration for which Superman has existed in this reality. David Corenswet will be stepping into the role of the Man of Steel, taking over from Henry Cavill’s portrayal in the DC Extended Universe, and kickstarting the new DCU in earnest when the film releases in theaters on July 11 this year.
Here’s how long Clark Kent has been Superman in James Gunn’s DCU
While speaking with Fandango‘s Perri Nemiroff, the Guardians of the Galaxy director elaborated on how the upcoming Superman film will set up the new DCU. Towards the end of his explanation, Gunn casually divulged that his version of Clark Kent has been operating as the Man of Steel for three years before the events of the new film take place.
“We’re introducing a whole new world, which is a lot of fun. We’re in an alternate reality where superheroes have existed for 300 years, and now we’re just picking up on the story of one particular superhero three years after he comes on the scene, who happens to be the most powerful metahuman of all time,” Gunn said.
The last time that a Superman movie introduced a new actor as the Man of Steel without first depicting its own take on the origin story for the character was 2006’s Superman Returns starring Brandon Routh in the title role. Gunn’s statements also suggest that his version of the DCU will have several other superheroes who have also established themselves within the universe prior to their big-screen debut.
In addition to Corenswet, Gunn’s new Superman film also stars Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Wendell Pierce, Frank Grillo, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced, among others.
