James Gunn: ‘I Don’t Think Superman Is All Good’
James Gunn says that Superman isn’t all good and Lex Luthor isn’t all bad in the new DCU movie.
Superman arrives in theaters in just one month from Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios. Written and directed by Gunn, the blockbuster movie stars David Corenswet as the titular superhero, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
What did James Gunn say about Superman and Lex Luthor?
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn said, “There are some characters that are really almost saintly, like Superman. There are some characters who are almost pretty terrible, like Lex Luthor. But I don’t think Lex is all bad, and I don’t think Superman is all good. All those people in between, the Guy Gardners and the Jimmy Olsens of the world, are even more complex in their moralities and what they think is okay.”
Green Lantern Guy Gardner is being played by Nathan Fillion in the film, while Skyler Gisondo portrays Jimmy Olsen.
The cast further includes Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/The Engineer, and Alan Tudyk as the voice of Superman Robot #4.
“Superman, DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures,” the official synopsis for the movie reads. “In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor, and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”
Superman hits United States theaters and IMAX on July 11, 2025.
