Why Thor Was Rejected by James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
In the final moments of Avengers: Endgame, Thor joined the Guardians of the Galaxy, setting up a future team-up movie. The potential inclusion of Thor concerned James Gunn, the writer and director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
What did James Gunn say about Thor not being in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?
While speaking with EW, Gunn recalled watching that moment in Avengers: Endgame. While most fans were excited for the Asgardians of the Galaxy, Gunn did not want to include Thor in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 despite his affinity for Chris Hemsworth.
“I said in the script notes: ‘I’m not gonna put him in. I don’t want to have Thor in the Guardians. I don’t want to do a movie with Thor,'” Gunn said. “I don’t understand the character that much. I love watching his movies, and I love Chris Hemsworth as a guy. I don’t understand how to write that character.”
While Thor did not join the Guardians in Gunn’s movie, the collaboration between the Son of Asgard and the ragtag group of misfits briefly happened in Thor: Love and Thunder. Thor and the Guardians teamed up for multiple missions at the beginning of the movie. However, the two quickly parted ways after Thor received a distress signal from Sif.
Hemsworth will reprise his role as Thor for Avengers: Doomsday, which opens on December 18, 2026. As for the Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s unknown if they will return to the MCU. If any Guardians show up in Doomsday or Secret Wars, the most likely candidate would be Peter Quill.
As for Gunn, the acclaimed writer and director is now co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran. Gunn is busy plotting the DC Universe, the company’s version of the MCU. The first movie in the DCU is Superman, which soars into theaters on July 11.
