Superman Post-Credit Scene Will Learn From Guardians of the Galaxy 2’s Mistake

James Gunn says that Superman’s post-credit scene will be much different than one of the ones featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Superman opens in theaters in approximately one month. Written and directed by Gunn, the Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios blockbuster stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

What did James Gunn say about Superman’s post-credit scene?

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn confirmed that Superman will have a post-credit scene; however, the article also notes that “it may not be exactly what audiences have come to expect.”

While details about this post-credit scene remain under wraps at this time, Gunn did say, “I have a philosophy about post-credit scenes. It’s somewhat related to my own mistakes in my time with Marvel.”

Prior to helming the DCU, Gunn directed all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Marvel Studios. In retrospect, Gunn says he likes the post-credit scene in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie featuring Howard the Duck, while he’s not too fond of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 one teasing Adam Warlock.

“I did not like what I did in Guardians 2, where we set up Adam Warlock, and we set up the Guardians of the Galaxy, and we set up all this s— that I didn’t necessarily plan on,” he said. “Well, I guess I kind of planned on fulfilling that [Adam Warlock] promise, but you want to be careful about that. The way a post-credits scene works is a punch to the face, like, ‘Oh my God! Look at this.’ At times when you’re using it just solely to set something up, sometimes you’re screwing yourself over. It was not easy to work Adam Warlock into Guardians 3. I loved working with Will [Poulter], and I liked dealing with the character, but at the end of the day, was he kind of fitting a weird square peg into a round hole? A little bit, yeah.”

Gunn further said that he doesn’t want a post-credits scene that does nothing but tease a future project or plot point “unless it really, really works.”

Superman will be released in United States theaters on July 11, 2025.
