Why Galactus Was Cut From Fantastic Four Reboot Revealed

Fantastic Four screenwriter Jeremy Slater recently detailed the original plans to feature Galactus in the 2015 reboot. In a new interview, he said plans for Galactus shifted multiple times before being dropped from the film. His statements come as Marvel Studios prepares to release The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July 2025.

In a June 2025 interview with ComicBook.com, Jeremy Slater said, “I wanted to make him our big bad and there was some internal push back. First, he was our big bad. Then, he was just going to appear in one scene. Then, he was only appearing in the post-credits scene.” The character was ultimately removed from the final version.

Slater’s initial concept aimed to reintroduce a more comic-accurate version of Galactus, contrasting the 2007 film’s portrayal. “Coming off the Galactus cloud from Rise of the Silver Surfer, which I was one of those fanboys probably bitching on Ain’t It Cool News back then about how he was a f—— cloud, I was excited to bring back a classic Galactus and have that Jack Kirby design,” he explained. “It looked like they’ve accomplished that, so I can’t wait to see him in real life.”

The 2015 Fantastic Four film, directed by Josh Trank, underwent major studio-mandated changes. Reports indicate that Trank and Slater had different visions for the project. Slater was inspired by the tone of The Avengers, while Trank reportedly preferred a darker, more grounded approach. “I think the script I was writing, and the movie I was seeing in my head, was much closer to that Phase 1 of what Avengers was doing at the time than it was anything else,” Slater said.

Marvel Studios’ new iteration, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, will release on July 25, 2025. The film stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the titular team. Ralph Ineson plays Galactus, while Julia Garner appears as Silver Surfer. The storyline unfolds in a stylized, 1960s-inspired universe with a strong cosmic focus.
