How To Train Your Dragon 2 Update: Director Wants 1 Star to Reprise Animated Role

Director Dean DeBlois is hoping that one of the stars of the animated How to Train Your Dragon 2 movie will reprise their role in the live-action sequel.

The live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon is coming to United States theaters this weekend. The movie is directed by DeBlois, who co-directed the 2010 animated movie with Chris Sanders. That animated film was followed by two sequels: 2014’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 and 2019’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

It has already been announced that a live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 is in the works. It is currently dated for June 11, 2027.

What did Dean DeBlois say about How to Train Your Dragon 2?

Speaking with ComicBook, DeBlois said that he’s hopeful that Cate Blanchett may be interested in playing Valka Haddock in live-action in the forthcoming continuation. Blanchett previously voiced the character in both animated sequels.

“Well, I’m wishful as well. It’s still early days,” he said. “I think she is probably waiting for a script, but I’ve been knocking on that door. I wrote the character of Valka for her, so I told her it’ll always be hers to turn down first.”

DeBlois also said about the sequel, “Certainly in the second movie, tackling the whole idea of Toothless being weaponized and turned against Hiccup and Stoic intervening like that, that’s a pretty heavy moment. It was heavy for animation. I think it’ll get even weightier in live action, so I look forward to that, too, because there’s something about the second movie. That, for most fans, is their favorite because it tackles tougher subject matter. It’s a little bit darker and more expansive, so I’m looking forward to it. I’m only writing right now, but I’ll get there. I’ll definitely get there.”

How to Train Your Dragon hits theaters on June 13, 2025, from Universal Pictures.
