Chris Evans Reveals Initial Reaction to Robert Downey Jr.’s Avengers: Doomsday Casting
Chris Evans has revealed his initial reaction to Robert Downey Jr.’s casting as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.
Evans played Steve Rogers/Captain America in the MCU until the character was officially retired in Avengers: Doomsday. Another Avengers movie, Avengers: Doomsday, is now in production and will see Downey Jr. star as Doctor Doom, though Evans is not returning for the film.
What did Chris Evans say about Avengers: Doomsday?
Speaking with ScreenRant, Evans was asked what he thought about Downey Jr., who previously played Tony Stark/Iron Man, now being a Marvel Studios villain.
“I mean, I can’t wait to see what he does,” he said. “I’m sure it’s going to be incredible.”
He further added, “When I first heard it, I was like, ‘Huh?’ But it’s almost like cheese and the crust. You’re like, ‘There’s nothing more we can do with this pizza,’ and then you’re like, ‘Oh, damn. You know? What else? What if we did this? (makes flipping motion). Whoa.’”
Evans also recalled how Downey Jr. “was the one who kind of talked” him into playing Captain America.
“I didn’t want to take the role. I said no a few times, and he was the one that kind of gave the knowledge,” he said. “…I said no a few times. I know. Just didn’t want to do it. I was scared, I was intimidated. I didn’t know. It was a big commitment, and I was kind of thinking about leaving acting in general. I don’t know.”
Plot details for Avengers: Doomsday remain under wraps at this time. The Marvel movie, directed by the Russo Brothers, will be released in United States theaters on December 18, 2026. The sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, then follows on December 17, 2027.
Evans, meanwhile, now stars alongside Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal in Celine Song’s Materialists, which hits theaters on June 13, 2025.
