Superman: Mister Terrific Actor Talks ‘Redemption Arc’ After X-Men Movie Death

Superman star Edi Gathegi couldn’t be happier to have been given another shot at playing a superhero on the big screen.

Before playing Mister Terrific in the upcoming DC Universe blockbuster, Gathegi had starred in the 2011 X-Men prequel First Class as the young mutant Darwin. Unfortunately, despite his mutant power allowing him the ability to adapt to survive any circumstance, Darwin was unceremoniously killed off early in the superhero movie, cutting Gathegi’s time in the X-Men Universe short.

12 years later, Gathegi was cast as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific in Superman, which is now slated to hit theaters in July. During a recent appearance on the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast to promote Superman, Gathegi was asked about how Mister Terrific was technically his second shot at playing a superhero after Darwin. However, the actor was in no mood to reflect on the past, saying, “We don’t talk about that. It’s too juicy.”

What did Edi Gathegi say about getting the chance to play a different superhero?

Instead, Gathegi took the opportunity to talk about what it meant to him to be able to bring an iconic Black superhero to the big screen. “I’m so happy that I get a redemption arc in the new DC Universe. I’m excited to inspire a whole generation of young Black kids with this new superhero,” he shared.

Gathegi’s Mister Terrific is one of several superheroes confirmed to be appearing alongside David Corenswet’s Man of Steel in James Gunn’s Superman. Also set to make their DCU debut in the movie are Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, and María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/The Engineer, with Milly Alcock also expected to cameo as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl ahead of her own movie in 2026.

Superman is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, as the first movie in the DCU.
