Star Wars’ Mark Hamill Says He Won’t Return as a ‘Naked Force Ghost’
While Daisy Ridley’s Rey will usher in a new era for Star Wars with the upcoming New Jedi Order film, fans won’t be seeing the return of Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker in the said project. His character bid adieu to the franchise after Star Wars: The Last Jedi, following his supposed death in the 2017 movie. Although fans have been waiting for word on Luke Skywalker’s fate ever since, Hamill believes that the character has played his part in the intergalactic saga.
Mark Hamill explains why he won’t return to Star Wars
In a recent interview, The Wild Robot star opened up about the possibility of returning as Luke Skywalker in the forthcoming Star Wars: New Jedi Order. Unfortunately for the admirers of George Lucas’ work, the actor has noted that his time with the franchise seems to be over.
While speaking with ComicBook.com, Mark Hamill expressed gratitude to Lucas for recruiting him for the original Star Wars trilogy. He stated, “I am so grateful to George [Lucas] for letting me be a part of that back in the day, the humble days when George called Star Wars’ the most expensive low-budget movie ever made. We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that.”
However, Hamill then issued a disappointing response to the prospect of returning as Luke Skywalker, noting, “But my deal is, I had my time. I’m appreciative of that, but I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters.”
The Invincible actor even took a fun jibe at Star Wars’ infamous trope of reviving dead characters as force ghosts. He said, “And by the way, when I disappeared in [The Last Jedi], I left my robes behind. And there’s no way I’m gonna appear as a naked Force ghost.”
Star Wars: New Jedi Order will build upon the journey of Daisy Ridley’s Rey and will take place 15 years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. While the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directorial has yet to receive an official release date from Disney, reports suggest that it will commence filming sometime in 2026.
