James Gunn recently revealed that his upcoming Superman movie is inspired by Godzilla Minus One. Gunn’s new directorial venture is set to hit theaters across the globe on July 11, 2025. Starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, and Isabela Merced, among many others, in key roles, Superman is the beginning of DC’s first chapter, Gods and Monsters.

Godzilla Minus One inspired James Gunn’s Superman in a big way

Director James Gunn recently had a chat with Japanese news outlet CinemaToday wherein he spoke about how Superman is inspired by Godzilla Minus One. Gunn shared that he tried to mimic Godzilla Minus One’s special effects in Superman.

He said, “I was influenced by special effects. I tried to fuse elements like giant monsters, robots, flying dogs, other superheroes.” In Superman’s trailer, Gunn showed the Kaiju monster that is going to appear in the movie and will fight Superman.

The director further stated that he wanted to have a human element in Superman similar to Godzilla, saying, “My goal was to make a film like Godzilla Minus One, which depicted Godzilla but also had great human drama. There is a human story at the root.”

Gunn also talked about his approach to presenting Superman on the screen. Although there have been many portrayals of Superman, Gunn focused on showing Superman “with goodness, kindness, compassion, and an attitude that values human life.”

He further added, “I portray a character with optimism and hope that we associate with Superman. However, the world he lives in is one in which these things are no longer as important as they used to be. There is some overlap with the real world we live in.”

Godzilla Minus One was widely regarded as one of the best movies of 2023 and won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
