Fantastic Four MCU Movie Will Embrace Being Silly
Marvel boss Kevin Feige explains how the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps is different from the past iterations.
Despite being Marvel’s first-ever family, past attempts to bring The Fantastic Four comic book characters to life on the big screen haven’t fared well. Tim Story’s Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), although both earned significant box office earnings, have received mixed reactions from critics and audiences alike.
The 2015 reboot, titled FANT4STIC, not only bombed terribly at the box office but was also considered the lowest-rated Fantastic Four movie, holding only a disappointing 9% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. So when Disney bought Fox in 2019, which gave Marvel full rights to the Fantastic Four franchise, Feige aimed to deliver a different Fantastic Four movie — one that would give Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing “justice.”
What did Kevin Feige say about The Fantastic Four: First Steps?
In an interview with Empire, the Marvel boss discussed how crucial it is for him to tell The Fantastic Four’s story the right way. “I think that there are no four characters that are more important for the history of Marvel.”
He continued, “When Disney bought Fox, it was really an unexpected dream come true. It came at the perfect time, to help us launch into a new era. They are Marvel’s First Family, and I really wanted to do them justice.”
According to Feige, the past movies have strayed away from the “silly” route, saying, “There was still a bit of fear of being silly.” Now, with the ever-changing landscape of the movie industry, embracing the more silly elements of the original comic books is no longer a problem.
Feige added, “In another time, some might consider the notion of somebody with a big, angular helmet walking through a city goofy. I consider it awesome.”
