Shazam’s DCU Future Addressed by Zachary Levi

Zachary Levi is getting honest with his thoughts on the possibility of another Shazam! movie.

The actor made his debut as the DC superhero in the well-received 2019 movie Shazam!, which was released as part of the DC Extended Universe. Unfortunately, the 2023 sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, was largely panned by critics and failed to leave much of an impact at the global box office, casting doubt over the future of the franchise.

What did Zachary Levi say about his future as Shazam?

Speaking with Variety, Levi confirmed that he would be down to return as Shazam for a solo movie set in James Gunn’s DC Universe. “Absolutely. I loved playing the role,” he remarked. However, the actor added that he wasn’t quite sure what the plan was for Shazam! in the DCU, admitting that it was “all well above my pay grade.”

Despite Levi’s willingness to reprise the role of Shazam in the DCU, it seems unlikely that he will be brought back as the superhero, given that Gunn has made it clear that most of the main DCEU cast would not be returning in the same roles for the new shared universe. Case in point, Jason Momoa played Aquaman in the DCEU, but will be bringing the alien bounty hunter Lobo to life in the DCU beginning with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

So far, DC Studios has not announced any new Shazam! project for the DCU, although that isn’t entirely surprising considering that most of the main players in the DCEU have yet to have their DCU future disclosed. This includes Wonder Woman, who was played by Gal Gadot in the DCEU. However, Gunn recently hinted that a new Wonder Woman project was in the works for the DCU, but was not ready “to be shared publicly yet.”

Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods are currently streaming on Max, while the first DCU movie, Superman, hits theaters on July 11, 2025.
