What did Marc Bernardin say about hosting Fatman Beyond with Kevin Smith?
When asked by ComingSoon if he has a favorite episode of Fatman Beyond that was particularly fun to make, Bernardin said, “Yeah, we’ve been doing Fatman Beyond, previously Fatman on Batman, for what feels like 15 years, I think, maybe? Which I’m struggling to wrap my head around. I think the episodes that are the most fun are the ones where we have a guest on that I rarely know anything about. Like, sometimes Kevin will run into a person at let’s just say a massage parlor and be like, ‘Hey! You should come on the podcast!’
“That’s how David Dastmalchian ended up on the podcast for the first time. He’s the most delightful person you will ever meet in your entire life, he is a sweetheart. Getting to know him, without thinking I was going to get to know him, had this weird, awesome chemistry to it. We had Rick Baker on the podcast. Getting to deep-diver with Rick Baker on Rick Baker-y things — you know, it’s Hollywood royalty who decides they want to come to a bar and talk about their resume with us. That was astonishing.
“I think, for me, the plutonic ideal of the podcast is when Kevin and I just find ourselves on some weird tangent talking about things that don’t feel like they connect to anything else. Most recently, we ended up talking for about 20, 25 minutes about how we are both in love with the Foods That Built America TV show on the History Channel. We talked more about that than we did Captain America: Brave New World. Which will let you know a couple of different things about A. Captain America and B. fat dudes talking about food documentaries.
“It’s two guys who are both alike in so many ways, but fundamentally different in other ways, being able to bond over our shared love for this stuff and how that kind of informs our perspectives on the rest of the world. That’s my favorite part of the podcast. When we can invite people into that, it’s nothing but joy. But even if it’s just him and I, two or three Celsius [drinks], and not enough sleep, we end up hatching ideas for a Dr. Seuss connected universe series of movies called World War Seuss — that’s what makes it tickle for me.”
