Rian Johnson’s Next Movie Won’t Be Knives Out 4 or Star Wars

Rian Johnson has revealed some details about his potential next project and the future of the Knives Out franchise.

Johnson, who previously helmed the divisive Star Wars: The Last Jedi, was announced to be working on a Star Wars trilogy project back in 2017. He then launched the successful Knives Out franchise in 2019, which is set to premiere its third installment this year. With his Stars Wars project still in limbo and the second season of Poker Face coming soon, the director is teasing about what his next project would be.

What did Rian Johnson say about his next movie, which won’t be Knives Out 4?

In an interview with Collider, the director shared that he’d still revisit the world of Benoit Blanc as long as Daniel Craig is on board and they have a compelling idea to continue the fictional detective’s story. However, though some fans are curious about the future of his Star Wars trilogy, the director still didn’t offer any solid updates about the project. Instead, he’s planning on creating an original beyond the mystery genre.

“As long as Daniel [Craig] still wants to keep doing it and as long as we have an idea that, to us, feels not just like cranking another one out, but feels genuinely exciting and scary like, ‘Oh, wow, could we pull that off?’ I love the genre. It’s endlessly malleable, and so it holds endless possibilities,” the director said.

He continued, “But at the same time, I have made three of them in a row. I don’t feel burnt out on it at all, but the next thing I have in my head to write is an original that’s not a mystery at all. It’s a totally different genre. One of the things I love about the mystery genre is that it holds the whodunit. Like sci-fi, it encompasses so many other types of genres. ‘Wake Up Dead Man,’ this next movie, is so different than ‘Glass Onion.’ It’s like night and day. And so, as long as we keep doing that, it’s exciting.”

Other details about Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the next installment after Glass Onion, is still being kept in the vault. It stars Jeremy Renner, Josh Brolin, Andrew Scott, Josh O’Connor, Mila Kunis, Daryl McCormack, Thomas Haden Church, Glenn Close, Cailee Spaeny, and Kerry Washington.

No exact release date has been set yet for Wake Up Dead Man. The first two Knives Out features are available to stream on Netflix.
