Tom Cruise Is an ‘Underestimated Actor’ Approaching a ‘Golden Age,’ Says Oscar Winner

Tom Cruise is one of the biggest actors in all of Hollywood. But according to fellow actor and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh, he’s even more than that.

What did Kenneth Branagh say about Tom Cruise?

Speaking with The Times of London in a recent interview (via Variety), Branagh — who worked with Cruise on the 2008 historical thriller Valkyrie — praised Cruise as an “underestimated actor,” and that he hopes Cruise eventually accepts a role that lets people see he has much more range than a simple movie star.

“If he ever tires of wowing the world with action, he’s going to surprise those who view him as only a movie star,” Branagh said. “What he’s done with [Mission: Impossible] and Top Gun is unique — cinematic entertainment with a serious intent to give you a wonderful time at the movies. But he’s an underestimated actor — for whom a golden age of performance beckons.”

Although Cruise is best known for his role in blockbuster films, the actor has still performed in a number of roles that aren’t in the action genre. These include movies like A Few Good Men, Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky, and more.

Outside of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Cruise is also set to star in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s upcoming, untitled movie. Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, Emma D’Arcy, Pip Torrens, and more will star in the film.
