With Sinners dominating its second weekend and Minecraft holding strong, a surprising twist came from the rerelease of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, which outperformed expectations to beat The Accountant 2 at the box office. While the Michael B. Jordan-led horror film continued its record-setting run, the Star Wars revival surged past projections, reshaping the weekend rankings.

Disney’s 20th anniversary rerelease of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith earned $25.2 million during its opening weekend in 2,775 theaters (via Box Office Mojo).

This total placed it ahead of Amazon MGM Studios’ The Accountant 2, which debuted with $24.4 million in 3,610 theaters. The rerelease marked the second-best opening for a Star Wars film in 4DX format, grossing $775,000 with a $15,000 per-screen average (via Deadline).

According to studio data, Revenge of the Sith also outperformed expectations by surpassing the 1997 rerelease of Return of the Jedi, which opened at $16.2 million, and is projected to outpace The Empire Strikes Back’s rerelease opening of $21.9 million. The film drew a 74% turnout from the 18-34 age demographic, with the highest concentration in the Midwest, Mountain, and West regions of the U.S.

The Accountant 2 opened slightly below its predecessor’s 2016 debut of $24.7 million. The film, starring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal, received an A- CinemaScore and had a 68% “definite recommend” on PostTrak.

Its Friday earnings included $9.4 million, with premium large format (PLF) screens contributing 38% of the weekend gross. Amazon MGM’s extensive marketing included a SXSW premiere, over 125 word-of-mouth screenings, and promotional tie-ins with Airstream and Amazon.com.

Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan and directed by Ryan Coogler, topped the weekend box office with $45 million in its second weekend. Its domestic total now stands at $122.5 million. A Minecraft Movie from Warner Bros earned $22.7 million in its fourth weekend. Sony’s Until Dawn opened with $8 million. The overall domestic box office reached $146 million—marking the strongest final April frame since the pandemic.
