Sinners Costume Designer on How Blade Reboot’s Story Was Similar
Ruth E. Carter, who served as the costume designer on Ryan Coogler’s period vampire movie Sinners, confirmed in a new interview that she was also attached to the MCU Blade reboot until that project was scrapped. She also revealed that the setting of Sinners and that of the Blade reboot were similar.
Ruth E. Carter details similarities between Sinners and Marvel’s Blade
Ruth E. Carter appeared on the John Campea Show and stated that the MCU Blade reboot, featuring Mahershala Ali’s rendition of the character, was supposed to have a 1920s setting. She was part of its development for some time and was making preparations for the production.
However, the project was “shut down” due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, and Carter found herself in a “limbo.” This was when she was contacted about Coogler’s vampire project and was told that it was also a period piece.
“Having done a lot of research for this period piece about a vampire — Blade is a vampire story,” Carter explained. “Ryan’s wife, Zinzi, who also was a producer on the picture [Sinners], she gave me a call and said, ‘I’m not gonna tell you the story, but Ryan has a story he’s going to tell you about … It is a period piece about vampires.’ And I thought, ‘Okay, I have already been living in that space for quite a long time prepping Blade, and Blade‘s not going to happen, so let me hear it.’”
Sinners takes place in the Mississippi Delta in the 1930s and revolves around twin brothers Smoke and Stack, portrayed by Michael B. Jordan, as they try to fight off a horde of vampires led by Jack O’Connell’s Remmick.
Carter admitted that she couldn’t initially believe that Coogler was doing a period piece about vampires immediately after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). Her comment about the reboot is in line with rumors circulating for some time. These rumors suggested that the Blade reboot would have been a period piece predominantly set in the 1920s and included scenes spanning multiple time periods.
Notably, Carter won Academy Awards for her previous two collaborations with Coogler: Black Panther (2018) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
