Antonio Banderas Joins Anthony Bourdain Movie as Dominic Sessa Casting Is Confirmed

Antonio Banderas has joined the cast of A24’s Anthony Bourdain biopic movie, titled Tony.

Matt Johnson, known for directing 2023’s BlackBerry, is working on a biopic about Bourdain for A24. Production on the movie is expected to begin next month.

Per Variety, Banderas has signed on to play an undisclosed role in the film.

Meanwhile, it has now been confirmed that The Holdover’s Dominic Sessa will play the Bourdain in the film. Sessa was previously reported to be in talks for the role last summer, though there’s been little news about the project since then.

What do we know about the Anthony Bourdain movie?

The movie “will take place in 1976 when a young Bourdain has a life-changing experience working and living in Provincetown, Mass,” according to Variety’s description of the plot.

No other casting has been announced at this time.

The script for Tony comes from Todd Bartels and Lou Howe. A24 is co-financing and co-producing the movie alongside Star Thrower and Zapruder Films. Kimberly Witherspoon, Chris Stinson, Amy Greene, Howe, Bartels, and Emily Rose will serve as executive producers.

In addition to BlackBerry, Johnson directed 2013’s The Dirties and 2016’s Avalanche. His next film, Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, is a time travel mockumentary adventure picture that premiered at the 2025 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival. Neon has purchased the distribution rights to the film and is expected to release it in 2025, though an exact date has not yet been set.

It was also recently announced that Johnson is the top choice to direct a live-action Magic: The Gathering movie for Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment, though his involvement has not been confirmed at this time.

A release date for the Anthony Bourdain biopic movie Tony has not yet been announced by A24.
