I Know What You Did Last Summer Director on if Sarah Michelle Gellar Is Returning
In the build-up to the release of 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has come out to reveal if Sarah Michelle Gellar, who featured in the 1997 flick, will be returning for its sequel. Featuring the likes of Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. in lead roles, the original movie followed the journey of four friends who inadvertently kill a man and dispose of his body to save themselves. However, their past comes back to haunt them when a mysterious stalker decides to pursue them for their crime.
The 2025 iteration of I Know What You Did Last Summer follows a similar plot with a fresh group of friends, only this time, they receive insights from two survivors from the 1997 movie. With Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt officially returning for the IKWYDLS sequel, many have wondered if Sarah Michelle Gellar will also reprise her role of Helen Shivers. Turns out, Kaytin Robinson has a disappointing answer to this fan query.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson tried to bring back Sarah Michelle Gellar in IKWYDLS sequel
In a recent discussion, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson confirmed that Michelle Gellar will not make an appearance in the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the Do Revenge director noted that she tried her best to cast the Cruel Intentions star to come back as Helen Shivers in 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, but to no avail. “I tried, okay? I harassed her! But she is dead,” the accredited filmmaker stated. She added, “I tried to pitch some crazy s— too. I was like, ‘What if it’s like you weren’t dead and you’re actually alive, but in hiding?’ And Sarah’s like, ‘I was on ice. I was the most dead a person could be. You can see my frozen body.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, but what if?’ And she said, ‘I am dead. I am Sarah Dead Gellar.'”
Kaytin Robinson also remarked that she wanted to cast Maya Hawke in the I Know What You Did Last Summer as well, but the actor’s packed schedule prevented that from happening. In addition to Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt, the primary cast of the IKWYDLS sequel includes Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King. The film is currently on track to hit theatres on July 18, 2025.
