Sydney Sweeney & Michael Bay Adapting Hit Sega Video Game Into Movie

Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney and blockbuster director Michael Bay have officially partnered with Universal Pictures to adapt one of Sega‘s popular arcade video game series into a live-action movie. This comes after the recent critical and commercial successes of video game adaptations such as the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise, HBO’s The Last of Us show, and the recent A Minecraft Movie.

What Sega video game are Sydney Sweeney & Michael Bay adapting?

Bay has signed on to direct the upcoming live-action adaptation of OutRun based on Sega’s classic arcade driving video game series which launched in 1986. Meanwhile, Sweeney has boarded the project as a producer only. At the moment, it’s unknown if the Euphoria star also has plans to appear in the movie. The screenplay will be written by Jayson Rothwell (Polar), with Bay also serving as a producer with Brad Fuller as part of their production banner Platinum Dunes’ first-look deal with Universal Pictures.

The adaptation will also be produced by Sega’s Toru Nakahara (Sonic the Hedgehog movies, Knuckles, Golden Axe), with Sega president Shuji Utsumi (president/COO of Sega Corp.) overseeing the project on behalf of the company. At the moment, further details about its plot and characters are still under wraps.

OutRun was designed by Yu Suzuki. Following it launch, it became the highest-grossing arcade game of 1987 worldwide, which influenced many racing games to come. Due to its critical and commercial success, it was followed by multiple sequels, including 1989’s Turbo OutRun, 1992’s OutRunners, 2003’s OutRun 2, and more.
