James Gunn & Peter Safran Explain Why WB Skydance Merger Is a Good Thing for DCU’s Future
James Gunn and Peter Safran have explained why they remain optimistic about the Warner Bros.–Skydance merger. In a red carpet interview for their upcoming movie Clayface, the DC CEOs addressed the recent merger.
When asked about the new era of Skydance by The Hollywood Reporter, Safran said, “It’s exciting. James and I had this bigger story that we wanted to tell when we started four years ago. We were just getting started telling it, so the fact that we now have the opportunity to do so with even more resources at our fingertips, with an even greater reach, is really exciting for us. There’s a lot coming up.”
“We just feel there’s a lot more going on that we want to dive into. And so we were thrilled that David Ellison invited us to continue. We really took him into the tent and talked about where we see it going over the next number of years so he’s got a really good sense of what we want to do, and he seems to be embracing that idea,” added Safran.
Gunn, who is currently working on the post-production of Man of Tomorrow, shared that they have already revealed their future plans to David Ellison, CEO of Skydance. “David knows everything. We told David long ago, and went through what the basic plan was. When he first brought us in and said he wanted to continue on with what we were doing, we told him all that we wanted to do [and talked] about what was happening, the secrets, where was the DCU going, and what was going to happen from Man of Tomorrow on,” said Gunn.
What comes next for James Gunn’s DCU after Clayface?
Gunn and Safran have planned a lot for their DC Universe and have already released two movies from their slate, Superman and Supergirl. Moreover, a full season of Lanterns was recently released on HBO this year. Their next movie is Clayface, DC’s first R-rated horror, which is set to release on October 23, 2026.
After Clayface, the Gunn-directed Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, will be released on July 9, 2027. Moreover, The Batman II is currently in production, with Steven Soderbergh stepping in to assist the project by Matt Reeves. The Robert Pattinson-led movie is scheduled to release on February 18, 2028. Apart from these, a true-crime mockumentary series, The People v. Gorilla Grodd, is currently in production.
