New Aquatic Horror Movie The Poolrooms First Look Is Perfect for Backrooms Movie Fans
The first look at The Poolrooms is giving fans a glimpse at its eerie world. The latest aquatic horror movie inspired by the Backrooms phenomenon has received its first look ahead of its release later this year.
Directed by Galen Christy and Sasha Yelaun, the horror film taps into the dread of liminal spaces. Like Backrooms, The Poolrooms explores the fear of being trapped in an otherwise mundane environment whose seemingly endless nature creates a sense of dread. The film follows a teen trapped inside an impossible aquatic structure filled with endless pools, waterslides, and mysterious passageways.
Here’s what to know about The Poolrooms and its terrifying aquatic world
The Poolrooms’ eerie setting consists of a vast, non-Euclidean labyrinth lined with sterile tiles, towering waterslides, and passageways that seem to stretch on forever, along with an unseen predatory entity.
As Christy explained to Bloody Disgusting, “There was something deeply disturbing about taking an object you associate with childhood and making you afraid of it. That’s what we wanted with SUNNY. This first look is just an introduction. Seeing it in motion, and seeing the horror it’s capable of, is another experience entirely.”
He added, “The goal was to make you feel like you’re standing there yourself, with no idea what’s waiting around the corner.”
Co-director Yelaun also added about how they filmed the movie, saying, “Galen and I have primarily been known in the industry as producers. Stepping into directing gave us a completely new perspective and brought back the sheer fun of letting our imaginations run wild.”
“Whether we were jumping into water slides or running around an empty soundstage in Atlanta figuring out how to bring a scene to life, there was a real sense of discovery. We had an incredible time making this film, and I think that energy comes through on screen,” she continued.
The Poolrooms is currently scheduled to be released on December 25.
