Fans of the Portokalos clan have waited years for news about another installment, and now Nia Vardalos has finally addressed the future of the My Big Fat Greek Wedding franchise. Speaking publicly for the first time about what comes next, the writer and star made it clear she isn’t finished with this family yet.

During a panel at FanX Salt Lake City over the weekend, Vardalos fielded a direct question about whether she would revisit the story through a fourth film or a brand-new series. “I do,” Vardalos told Collider. “I just feel like I can’t not hang out with this family.”

That answer gives hope to anyone wondering about the future of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The original 2002 film, which Vardalos wrote and starred in opposite John Corbett under director Joel Zwick, turned a small indie feature into a $368.7 million blockbuster. It got an Oscar nomination and became a cultural touchstone for romantic comedies.

Three movies and a brief television run later, the franchise still holds a devoted following. The most recent one, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, hit theaters in 2023 and framed itself as a farewell. The story sent the family to Greece to honor their late patriarch, Gus, and paid tribute to Michael Constantine, who passed away in 2021.

For Nia Vardalos, the audience’s appetite keeps the door open. “I know that we have… there’s such an audience out there that wants to know what happens to this family, and we do too, and we love to hang out together, and it’s just such a gift, and I thank you so much for going to the movies because they’re friendly, and they’re a family who goes through real stuff and they work things out together. And I believe that the reason that they resonate is because we, the cast, are a family.”

No studio has confirmed a fourth movie or a series. Even so, Vardalos’s comments suggest the Portokalos family could return whenever she decides their next chapter is ready.
