What is Red Riding: 1974 with Andrew Garfield about?
Red Riding: 1974 follows Eddie Dunford, a young crime reporter working for the Yorkshire Post. When a young girl goes missing, Eddie becomes interested in the case. He soon discovers similarities between the disappearance and a series of mysterious child murders from previous years.
Eddie faces opposition as he tries to investigate further. The local police refuse to cooperate, while his editor also pushes back against his reporting. Despite these obstacles, Eddie continues searching for information that could connect the different cases.
His investigation eventually brings him into contact with Paula Garland, a widow whose daughter disappeared years earlier. Paula also has a mysterious connection to John Dawson, a wealthy developer with significant influence in the area. Eddie’s involvement with Paula takes his investigation in a new direction.
As Eddie digs deeper, he finds himself surrounded by people who may have their own reasons for keeping the truth hidden. The missing girl, the murders, and Dawson’s influence gradually become connected as Eddie continues his search.
The film is based on David Peace’s novel Nineteen Seventy-Four. It is the first installment in the Red Riding trilogy, followed by Red Riding: 1980 and Red Riding: 1983. The trilogy takes place in Yorkshire and explores different crime stories across the region.
Jarrold directed the film from a screenplay by Tony Grisoni. Red Riding: 1974 originally premiered on Channel 4 in 2009. It later received a limited theatrical release in the United States.
