Dolly Parton’s Most Famous Movie Is Returning to Theaters, Ticket Proceeds Go to Charity
Dolly Parton‘s most famous movie will make its theatrical comeback as part of a charity campaign. All earnings from the screening will go to the late star’s foundation to support her lifelong mission.
According to Deadline, a newly restored version of Parton’s famous 1980 movie 9 to 5 will return to theaters for a special screening. This movie will have a weeklong theatrical run beginning on October 9, 2026. Moreover, the tickets for the newly restored version by 20th Century Studios are currently on sale on Fandango.
9 to 5 was directed by Colin Higgins from a story by Patricia Resnick. Alongside Parton, the workplace comedy also stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dabney Coleman. In 9 to 5, a group of female office workers – the all-knowing manager who trained the boss but can’t get promoted, a befuddled newcomer, and an alluring personal secretary everyone presumes is having an affair – all band together to seek revenge on the man who is making their lives miserable.
The charitable mission behind the 9 to 5 theatrical return
As stated above, the rerelease of Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 is part of a charity campaign dedicated to her lifelong work. All earnings from ticket sales during the weeklong theatrical run will be donated by Disney to The Dollywood Foundation. This will be done in support of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, an initiative that has provided millions of free books to children around the world.
Furthermore, this announcement was made on Give Like Dolly Day, a new annual celebration that is observed every 9/25, paying homage to the title of her 1980 comedy flick. Give Like Dolly Day honors Parton’s lifelong mission to help children and inspire communities to make a difference in children’s lives. It embraces the late star’s message, “Dream More, Learn More, Care More, and Be More.”
Moreover, it was previously announced that the Country Music Association will pay tribute to Parton’s legacy with a two-hour live television special titled CMA Presents I Will Always Love You: A Celebration of Dolly Parton on October 21, 2026. It will air live concurrently on ABC and Disney+. The event will take place at Belmont University’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts in Nashville. This special will be available to stream on Hulu the following day. All proceeds from this event will also go to Parton’s Imagination Library.
