Saw 11 Made the Brave Choice Star Wars Was Too Afraid to Make

Saw 11 has made an important creative decision that Star Wars has been too afraid to make.

Saw 11’s development process has been rocky, but the upcoming sequel finally has a director. Mike P. Nelson, who helmed the Silent Night, Deadly Night reboot, will direct Saw 11. Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock will write the script.

Saw 11 marks the return of James Wan and Leigh Whannell to the franchise. Wan directed 2004’s Saw from a script he co-wrote with Whannell, who also starred in the movie. Wan and Whannell will produce Saw 11 with Jason Blum. Bringing back Saw’s original creators is a smart move that should pay off. Lucasfilm should have followed the same playbook with George Lucas and Star Wars.

Saw 11 bringing back its original creators is what Star Wars should have done with George Lucas

Lucas was preparing to work on a Star Wars trilogy in the 2010s that would have been Episodes VII, VIII, and IX. However, those plans changed once Disney purchased Lucasfilm. Lucas was brought on as a creative consultant for The Force Awakens, but Disney did not follow his creative plans, so Lucas walked away from his movies.

Disney’s sequel trilogy was a profitable ordeal. Creatively, it suffered, especially with The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. The Last Jedi was extremely polarizing, while fans mostly rejected The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm has yet to recover from the disappointment of The Rise of Skywalker. Star Wars thought The Mandalorian and Grogu would relaunch the franchise’s movie division, but that backfired.

Sometimes, you have to go back to move forward. Why doesn’t Lucasfilm bring back Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, into the fold? Star Wars movies aren’t at rock bottom, but they are struggling. If Lucas doesn’t want to come back, then so be it. At the very least, Disney should ask Lucas to help consult as they map out Star Wars’ future.

Lucas is 82, meaning Disney is running out of time to seek advice from the man who knows Star Wars the best. What’s the worst that could happen? Star Wars has no plan theatrically after Starfighter in 2027. Every option should be on the table, including the idea of asking Lucas for help.

I commend the Saw franchise for allowing Wan and Whannell to return. Unlike Star Wars, Saw was not coming off a creative flop. In fact, Saw X received the franchise’s best reviews. However, production stalled as issues surfaced over how to continue after Saw X.

Once Blumhouse bought Twisted Pictures’ stake in the Saw franchise, Blum smartly brought Wan and Whannell back into the fold. Who better to plot Saw’s future than the two men who created it? Wan and Whannell helped take Saw from a successful movie into a lucrative franchise. I have no doubt they can help Saw carve out its future.
