Avengers: Doomsday Director Wants to ‘Surprise’ Fans With Changes to Important Characters
The director of Avengers: Doomsday revealed that they want to “surprise” fans by making changes to certain characters. The director recently attended an Avengers Endgame: Encore screening, which connects the Infinity Saga to the upcoming movie.
During a Q&A with GamesRadar+, Anthony Russo was asked about the difficulties of returning to the MCU after the Infinity Saga with the same collection of characters. Russo said, “[They have] a lot of respect for the storytelling journey that these characters have had up to this point. That’s part of their magic, a big part of their magic. But at the same time, we need to surprise ourselves in terms of who those characters are, where they can go, what they can do, what can happen, and in doing that, we hopefully surprise audiences as well.”
One of the changes made is Robert Downey Jr.‘s casting as Victor von Doom in the next stage of the MCU. Downey Jr. has played the beloved character Iron Man since 2008. In the upcoming movie, the actor is set to play a villain.
Russo continued, “It is figuring out that balance of how do you challenge yourself, i.e., casting Robert Downey as Victor von Doom, and then how do you sort of stay faithful to the very thoughtful and wonderfully effective storytelling road that’s been traveled up until this point.”
What else did Anthony Russo say about Avengers: Doomsday?
The director also stated they had to use their own meters to navigate the creative process and reintroduce these characters in the next stage of the MCU. “One thing we always like to remind people of, you know, fandom does not speak with a single voice. There’s a wide variety of opinions in terms of who responds to which characters and which versions of which characters people respond to; it’s a very complex relationship that people have with the characters,” Russo added.
Anthony Russo co-directs Avengers: Doomsday with his brother, Joe Russo. The movie will be the first Avengers film after the Infinity Saga. Although Downey will not be reprising his role as Iron Man, there are other characters who will return in roles they previously played.
These include Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova/Black Widow, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Channing Tatum as Gambit, Ian McKellen as Magneto, and James Marsden as Cyclops, among many others.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
