Star Wars & Avengers Are Getting an Immersive Upgrade Fans Won’t See Coming

Star Wars and Marvel fans are about to experience the movies in a more immersive way than they’ve ever imagined. During the annual Meta Connect event this week, Industrial Light & Magic announced Disney Immersive Cinema by ILM, a new VR technology experience for Meta VR Glasses. The VFX company revealed that it is developing new ways to enhance Disney’s top franchises for virtual reality.

During the event, ILM announced new, immersive versions of Star Wars: A New Hope and Avengers: Infinity War, available exclusively on the Meta VR Glasses. The new versions will be available to watch this spring through the Disney Immersive Cinema by ILM app.

How immersive cinema could change the way fans experience Star Wars and Avengers

Disney Immersive Cinema expands a movie in VR by surrounding the viewer with immersive environments, dynamic effects, and spatial audio, all in 3D. The effects only kick in for certain key portions of the film. Following the launch, Disney and ILM plan to release more VR-enhanced versions of their films.

That’s not all, as the Meta VR Glasses are the first IMAX Enhanced-certified VR device. Users will be able to watch select movies in IMAX’s exclusive expanded aspect ratio at home. The additional feature is key for Marvel fans, as Disney has largely kept MCU IMAX aspect ratios exclusive to digital platforms rather than physical releases.

Avengers: Infinity War was Hollywood’s first feature film shot entirely using digital IMAX cameras. Following its theatrical run, the IMAX version of the movie was locked away for many years until Disney+ announced the IMAX Enhanced program. However, the IMAX Enhanced versions of certain MCU movies have been previously pulled from the streamer due to licensing issues in some territories.

The announcement also comes just months ahead of Star Wars’ 50th anniversary, which Lucasfilm will celebrate by releasing the original film in a newly restored format.

The Meta VR Glasses will go on sale in spring 2027 for $1,299.99.
