Avengers: Doomsday Directors on Why Robert Downey Jr. Was Their No. 1 Doctor Doom Choice
Avengers: Doomsday directors have explained why Robert Downey Jr. was their top choice to play Doctor Doom. The anticipated MCU epic will be released in theaters later this year.
Joe and Anthony Russo have revealed the reason why they wanted Robert Downey Jr. to portray Victor von Doom in the upcoming movie. According to them, it’s because the actor has been a foundational part of the franchise since Iron Man in 2008.
In an interview with Marvel’s official website, Anthony recalled how emotional it was for him to shoot Tony’s final scene in Avengers: Endgame, in which he sacrifices himself using the Infinity Stones. The scene became more than what it was because of where it was filmed.
“That wasn’t a part of the original photography,” Russo said. “We shot that pickup on the same stage opposite the Paramount movie lot where Robert auditioned for Iron Man. That pickup was very memorable for that reason.”
The Russos want to build on fans’ emotional connection to the MCU
While reflecting on the final sequence of Avengers: Endgame, the Russos said it was a powerful, emotional scene that resonated with MCU fans worldwide.
And now, they want to build on that same connection for Doomsday as well. “Audiences are coming to Avengers: Doomsday with a lot of emotional connection to prior experiences within the MCU,” said Anthony.
He added, “We have those same emotional connections. So, we want to honor that and figure out how we are using that value and that emotional investment to go somewhere new.”
Alongside Downey Jr. as the main antagonist, Doomsday’s massive cast also includes Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova/Black Widow, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Channing Tatum as Gambit, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, and more.
Avengers: Doomsday releases on December 18, 2026.
