Once Upon a Time in Texas Trailer Reimagines Beloved Henry Thomas Western With New Scenes

Filmmaker Tanner Beard has returned to the American frontier with an expanded version of his Western, The Legend of Hell’s Gate: An American Conspiracy. Fifteen years after the original, Beard has reworked it into Once Upon a Time in Texas. Henry Thomas is leading the movie, which features new scenes, updated visual effects, restored storylines, and a new musical score.

The project stars Thomas alongside Beard, Lou Taylor Pucci, Eric Balfour, and Clive Standen. The actor, known for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and The Haunting of Hill House, leads the cast in the new version of the Western.

A planned 15th-anniversary digital restoration has become a much larger project. Tanner Beard has returned to the Universal Studios backlot to film new material, bring back characters, and restore parts of the story that were removed from the original cut. 

Composer Jamie Christopherson also created a new orchestral score for Once Upon a Time in Texas.

“Fifteen years later, I had the opportunity to go back into this world with everything I’ve learned as a filmmaker,” the filmmaker said in a statement. “We were shooting new scenes, bringing characters back, rebuilding the sound and music and finding an entirely new rhythm for the story.”

What happens in Once Upon a Time in Texas trailer?

The new trailer follows Isaac McKinnon across two different periods in the American West. The story begins in San Francisco in 1905, where McKinnon starts searching for his brother, who has been missing for years. His search leads into a flashback set in Texas in 1876.

The story then moves between historical events and the legends that grew around them, as McKinnon becomes caught in a dangerous conflict involving outlaws, lawmen, and criminals.

The trailer features several well-known figures from the Old West, including Doc Holliday, Bass Reeves, Belle Starr, Jesse James, John St. Helens and train robber Sam Bass.  

Once Upon a Time in Texas will have its Dallas red-carpet premiere on October 6. Strike Back Studios will release the film in select Texas theaters on October 16, 2026. 

It will then arrive on Digital and video-on-demand platforms on November 17.
