Godzilla Minus Zero’s Biggest Change Shows What the MonsterVerse Is Missing
The most significant change in Godzilla Minus Zero highlights what the MonsterVerse is missing.
Godzilla Minus Zero has received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association. The MPA cites “violent content and bloody images” as the reason behind its rating. The sequel to Godzilla Minus One becomes the first Godzilla movie with an R rating.
Godzilla Minus Zero continues to differentiate itself from the MonsterVerse, the other franchise currently utilizing Godzilla. The R-rating signals a strategy shift between the franchises, but it’s something the MonsterVerse could benefit from going forward.
Godzilla Minus Zero’s R-rating is an exciting change for the monster’s future
When the MonsterVerse first introduced the iconic monster in 2014’s Godzilla, the creature was depicted as a villain. As the movie progresses, Godzilla becomes humanity’s only hope to defeat the MUTOs and ensure the human race’s survival.
In subsequent MonsterVerse movies, Godzilla has fully morphed into an action hero. The MonsterVerse movies are PG-13, so these stories can only depict a certain amount of violence and terror. The size is still there, but it’s a more watered-down version of Godzilla in terms of its brutality.
It’s come to the point where Godzilla becomes an ally to humans by teaming with Kong to defeat greater threats. Godzilla is certainly still a threat, but the creature is no longer as terrifying as it once was. Humanity must embrace the monster and allow it to fight in hopes that it destroys a greater threat.
Godzilla Minus Zero’s titular creature is a completely different version. The R rating allows the sequel to depict more bloodshed and violence, making Godzilla that much more dangerous. Godzilla is supposed to be an enemy toward humans, not an ally. Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla Minus Zero establish that theme more than the MonsterVerse, a well-received decision by fans.
The MonsterVerse’s Godzilla feels like an action figure—one that relies on size and spectacle to drive the story. There is a place for that version of Godzilla in Hollywood. However, I prefer Godzilla Minus Zero’s approach to the character, which reestablishes the titular creature as a destructive force and horrifying threat to the human race.
