Resident Evil’s Winning Formula Is Coming to a New Silent Hill Movie Next
Resident Evil‘s reboot success is sparking a new trend. Another hit video game franchise is now planning its own big-screen return. Konami’s Silent Hill has been adapted to film many times but has consistently failed to connect with audiences or generate strong box office numbers. That might change soon, as a new Silent Hill movie is reportedly in development.
In a new profile in The Wall Street Journal (via Blood Disgusting), Resident Evil producer Roy Lee has revealed his involvement with Silent Hill. It’s unclear if the franchise will be adapted into a film or a TV show. It’s also unknown how far along development is, so it could take many years before audiences see it. The update comes the same week as the release of the next game in the series, Silent Hill: Townfall.
Silent Hill’s previous movies struggled to connect with audiences
The Silent Hill franchise includes over a dozen games, including spin-offs. Since the franchise’s inception in 1999, it has been adapted into a film trilogy and an interactive web series. Christophe Gans directed the first and third films, while the second was helmed by M. J. Bassett. While the trilogy has collectively grossed over $200 million worldwide, it largely received negative reviews from critics and audiences. The latest installment, Return to Silent Hill, was based on Silent Hill 2 and released earlier this year to negative reviews.

The Resident Evil franchise was on a similar trajectory before Zach Cregger’s reboot. Although Paul W.S. Anderson’s six-film saga was negatively received, it was a box-office success. Cregger’s reboot got the franchise’s highest-grossing opening, but crucially, it won over both critics and audiences.
The Silent Hill franchise has come back in a big way. After a big delay between entries, fans have enjoyed the Silent Hill 2 remake, Silent Hill f, and the upcoming Silent Hill: Townfall in consecutive years. It remains to be seen whether the next Silent Hill adaptation will be as successful as Resident Evil.
