Wicked Director’s Britney Spears Movie Finally Gets Casting Update, But Not What Fans Want to Hear

Wicked‘s director has shared a new behind-the-scenes update on his Britney Spears biopic feature, but it’s not what fans expected. The biopic was originally announced in 2024, but fans waiting for casting news may have to wait longer.

Jon M. Chu discussed the project with Variety at the opening gala of the George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles. He revealed that casting is not currently a priority. The 46-year-old also said he received many casting submissions for the project.

“I get emails every day, hundreds of emails from people all around the world. Thank you for sending all your auditions,” Chu told Variety. He added, “I am not even thinking about casting right now. We’re just trying to get the story right.”

No actors have been announced for the project so far. Therefore, it could be some time before the film announces its cast.

While casting remains on hold, at least for now, Chu confirmed that screenwriter Liz Meriwether is working on the screenplay. In the same interview, the filmmaker acknowledged that he read some parts of the script and found them “incredible.”

“She’s doing many beautiful things and I may or may have not gotten glimpses of what she’s been doing and it’s incredible,” the 46-year-old said. “It’s incredible, profound, beautiful. And that’s all I can say about it. You already got me to say too much.”

When asked whether he had spent time with Spears herself, Chu kept things vague, simply saying, “I cannot say anything right now.” Instead, he was more open to discussing his favorite Spears songs, mentioning he’s introducing his children to “Baby One More Time” among others.

The upcoming movie is based on Spears’ 2023 bestselling memoir The Woman in Me. Universal Pictures acquired the film rights in 2024, with Marc Platt set to produce.

Chu’s latest comments suggest that the Britney Spears biopic remains in the early stages of development.
