Spider-Man 5 Gets Update as Brand New Day’s Destin Daniel Cretton Scores New Sony Deal
Spider-Man 5 has received an update after Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton signed a new Sony deal. The filmmaker has agreed to a three-year overall pact with Sony Pictures. However, the agreement does not include a confirmed directing commitment for the next Spider-Man movie.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, under the agreement, Cretton will develop films through his production company, Hisako Films. He will work alongside the company president, Jeyun Munford, on those projects. Sony wants him to return for another Spider-Man movie.
Cretton’s relationship with Sony has grown beyond Brand New Day. Hisako Films will develop new projects under the studio arrangement. His next directing schedule is Lionsgate’s live-action Naruto adaptation.

Cretton addressed the new partnership while discussing future theatrical projects. He praised his experience working with Sony during Brand New Day. However, his statement did not confirm whether he will direct the next Spider-Man movie.
The director said, “I had the best time making Brand New Day with Tom Rothman, Sanford Panitch, and their team, and I’m so excited to tell more meaningful stories that people can experience in theaters around the world.”
Sony executives also praised the filmmaker. Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch praised Cretton’s vision and storytelling skills. Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman called Cretton an important creative partner for the studio.
The new agreement follows the strong box-office performance of Brand New Day. The film has earned more than $2.45 billion worldwide and more than $945 million domestically. It also became the highest-grossing domestic release in U.S. box-office history.
Despite the new deal, Spider-Man 5 remains without an announced release date. Sony has also not confirmed Cretton as its director. Meanwhile, his Naruto project is expected to begin production in the first half of 2027.
