James Bond: Saoirse Ronan Has Surprising New Take on Playing 007 Villain After Viral Comments

Saoirse Ronan has seemingly changed her stance on playing the big bad in a 007 movie. Surprisingly, this comes after the rumored involvement of her husband as the lead.

Speaking with PEOPLE recently, the 32-year-old stated, “I’ve eaten my words after saying that now.” The comment comes as a stark contrast to how the actor had repeatedly expressed her wish to play the main antagonist in a James Bond movie. Notably, Ronan’s husband, Jack Lowden, has been heavily linked and rumored to be cast as the fan-favorite spy in the upcoming Bond project.

Back in 2024, the American-Irish actress stated that she would want to play a dark character. Instead of trying to win over Bond, Ronan wanted her character to have several mysterious layers. In a more recent interaction with Empire, the 32-year-old said, “I want to go dark. I said that I wanted to be a Bond villain and I’m dead serious.”

Saoirse Ronan has a clear vision for a female Bond villain

Ronan shared how she has already figured out what kind of villain she would portray if she appears as the antagonist in a James Bond film. Ronan wants to play a powerful character who could represent the anger and frustration that many women may feel but refrain from expressing.

The Lady Bird actress told Empire, “I think it would be really interesting, having a young female villain. Especially for girls and women, to see someone who can just take all that pent-up anger and direct it somewhere, there’s something interesting about that dramatically. So I would love to do more of that.”

In the past, James Bond fans had already witnessed a few strong female antagonists who have challenged Bond over the years. In the 1985 film A View to a Kill, Grace Jones played the role of the villain May Day. Xenia Onatopp, played by Famke Janssen, was the antagonist in the 1995 James Bond feature, GoldenEye. In The World Is Not Enough (1999), the role of the female antagonist Elektra King was played by Sophie Marceau.
