Star Wars: George Lucas Reveals Why He Walked Away From 3 More Movies
George Lucas has finally revealed the reason why he decided to walk away from “three more” Star Wars movies. The 82-year-old is the creative visionary behind the billion-dollar space-opera franchise that began more than five decades ago.
In an interview with CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell, George Lucas revealed that he chose to sell Lucasfilm to Disney and step away from Star Wars in 2012 because of his age. “Well, I’m 82, so there is a limit,” he said. He had another major goal to pursue, which was more important than Star Wars – his museum. Lucas also wanted to spend more time with his family.
“When I decided to retire from making movies, which was a big deal because I had three more Star Wars to make, but I realized that I was running out of time, and I did want to make this museum,” he added. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Arts was recently opened to the public.
Lucas mentioned that he had been preparing to work on Episodes VII, VIII, and IX. The three movies were later released as part of the sequel trilogy under Disney. They were titled The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker.
What George Lucas planned for Episodes VII, VIII & IX
George Lucas previously said that his versions of Star Wars Episodes VII, VIII, and IX would have focused on the “microbiotic world” of the Force, according to World of Reel.
The planned trilogy could have featured Darth Maul and an apprentice, Darth Talon, rising through the underworld. As for Leia and Luke, they would have rebuilt the Republic and the Jedi, respectively.
In the last decade, multiple projects have been released in the franchise. However, only a few of them have stood out among fans.
The sequel trilogy kicked off well, with 2015’s The Force Awakens breaking box-office records and grossing over $2 billion. However, the next two installments received a more divided response due to their various themes and the treatment of established characters.
The next Star Wars project to come out soon will be a movie led by Ryan Gosling. Titled Starfighter, it will hit theaters on May 28, 2027.
