Watch Lanterns Star Aaron Pierre’s 87% RT Thriller Before It Leaves Streaming
Aaron Pierre has become a household name after taking on the role of Green Lantern, aka John Stewart, but one of the performances that got him noticed is set to leave a major streamer. The film holds an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and subscribers have only a few weeks left to catch it.
Aaron Pierre-led Brother to leave Netflix next month
Brother, starring Aaron Pierre, is among the titles Netflix is pulling on October 3 (via What’s On Netflix). Directed by Clement Virgo and based on David Chariandy’s novel, the story follows two brothers, Francis and Michael.
The duo grows up in Scarborough, a Toronto suburb, across three different points in time: as young boys left alone at night while their mother works late shifts, as teenagers navigating gang tension and police suspicion in the early 1990s, and years later, when an adult Michael is still piecing together what happened to Francis. Pierre plays Francis opposite Lamar Johnson’s Michael, with Marsha Stephanie Blake as their mother, Ruth.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022 and went on to screen in competition at the BFI London Film Festival before landing on Netflix. It later picked up two NAACP Image Awards for outstanding independent and international motion picture, along with multiple Canadian Screen Award wins.
Critics have responded strongly to the performances and craft on display, pushing the film to an 87% Tomatometer score from 46 reviews and an 80% audience score, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers have also pointed to the film’s layered timeline and its unflinching look at Black masculinity and grief as standout elements of Virgo’s direction.
Pierre’s work here predates his current run of popular roles. He’s now in arguably his biggest part yet, playing John Stewart alongside Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan in Lanterns from DC Studios.
