Cynthia Erivo’s New Movie Trailer Turns a Top Defense Lawyer’s World Upside Down

Cynthia Erivo stars as a defense lawyer whose world begins to unravel in the gripping new trailer. Directed by Susanna White, the upcoming crime-drama is based on Suzie Miller‘s Tony Award-winning one-woman play, Prima Facie.

The official synopsis reads, “A young, ambitious trial lawyer brilliantly navigates the ruthless London court system where she is unmatched in her defense of the accused, including men charged with sexual assault. Just as her career is taking off, a life-altering event forces her to reckon with her belief in the judicial system that was once the core of her identity.”

What happens in Prima Facie trailer?

The trailer opens with Erivo starring as Tessa, an ambitious lawyer described as “one of the top legal minds.” She is shown standing strong with her defenses in court, including men accused of assault. However, things take a turn when she becomes a victim herself.

As the trailer progresses, Erivo’s character is visibly shaken as she confronts what happened to her. The courtroom is asking her questions she once asked other victims. Ultimately, it boils down to consent, which should “never be on trial.”

Miller has adapted the screenplay for the big screen. In an interview with Playbill, the writer revealed that the play was partly inspired by her experiences as a lawyer. She said, “When I was at law school, many of my girlfriends had really bad experiences, but didn’t have the language to talk about what happens on a date when something goes into a different zone.”

Apart from Erivo, the crime drama also features Daniel Ings, Toheeb Jimoh, Noma Dumezweni, Harry Treadaway, Simon Russell Beale, Elizabeth Dulau, Khalid Abdalla, Elliot Levey, and Bronagh Waugh.

Greer Simpkin, Kevin Loader, and David Jowsey served as producers for the movie. Executive producers include Erivo, Miller, White, Solome Williams, Anita Verma-Lallian, Malinda Wink, Hugo Grumbar, and Tim Haslam, among others.

Prima Facie premiered on Broadway with Jodie Comer in the lead role. Comer won the 2023 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for the role. The movie had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month. It will be released in the U.K. and Irish movie theatres beginning November 13. The U.S. theatrical release date has not yet been announced.
