The Social Reckoning’s MPA Rating Is a Major & Unexpected Change From The Social Network
The Social Reckoning has received its MPA rating, and it is not what fans expected. The rating also hints at the sequel’s darker turn from The Social Network, which was rated PG-13 upon its release on October 1, 2010.
Written and helmed by Aaron Sorkin, The Social Reckoning has been rated R for language by the Motion Picture Association (MPA). Although the two movies are connected, the R rating swerves Sorkin’s sequel into a darker path.
The Social Network was directed by David Fincher, from a screenplay by Sorkin based on Ben Mezrich’s book. It followed the story of Facebook’s origin. It was a critically acclaimed feature which went on to earn three Academy Awards and four Golden Globes. These achievements also include Sorkin’s Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The Social Reckoning takes The Social Network story into darker territory
In the 2010 film, Jesse Eisenberg portrayed a young Mark Zuckerberg, who created the social networking site. He is sued by the twins, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who claimed he stole their idea, and by the co-founder, Eduardo Saverin, who was later squeezed out of the business.
The sequel will feature Jeremy Strong as an older Zuckerberg. According to the official synopsis, The Social Reckoning “follows Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer, who enlisted the help of Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter, to blow the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.”
Unlike the first film, the sequel features Facebook as an already established social media giant. Haugen’s decision to disclose internal data became the basis of The Wall Street Journal’s Facebook Files reporting, which the movie heavily focuses on.
The Social Reckoning also features Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, and Bill Burr. Todd Black, Peter Rice, Stuart Besser, and Sorkin serve as producers of the movie.
It is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 9, 2026.
