Latest Narnia: The Magician Nephew’s Photo Puts Greta Gerwig in Front of the Camera
A new set photo from Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew offers a first look at Greta Gerwig in 1950s London. Based on C. S. Lewis’ classic 1955 novel, the upcoming movie is one of the most anticipated films of 2027, and the latest image gives fans a closer look at Gerwig’s version.
On September 21, 2026, Empire released first-look images of the upcoming Narnia adaptation, written and helmed by Gerwig. In the set, the director is shown walking alongside David McKenna, who is set to play young Digory Kirke in the movie.
This image also offers fans another look at the shift in the story’s setting in Gerwig’s retelling. Instead of the original novel’s 1900s setting, the Barbie director’s version takes audiences to 1950s Britain instead. Apart from this, the adaptation’s basic premise is taken from the first book in the timeline.
What makes Gerwig’s version of Narnia different from past adaptations?
The difference in the timeline is not the only change the director has made in the upcoming movie. For instance, rock ‘n’ roll will be a major part of Gerwig’s adaptation, as the retelling is inspired by the British rock era of the 1960s and 1970s.
The adaptation will feature an original score by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who have previously worked with Gerwig on Barbie. Additionally, the characters’ style is David Bowie-esque, as they don a glam-rock, rock-opera aesthetic.
In an interview with Empire, the Little Women director said, “I wanted a rock opera. I wanted it to be big and transporting. Narnia is literally a world made out of music. It is a world sung to life by Aslan, and rock ’n’ roll to me felt like a world made out of music.”
Alongside McKenna, the cast also includes Beatrice Campbell as Polly, Meryl Streep voicing Aslan, Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew Ketterley, Carey Mulligan as Mabel Kirke, and Emma Mackey as Jadis, the White Witch. Ciarán Hinds, Denise Gough, Susan Wokoma, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith are also listed as part of the ensemble.
Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, Vincent Sieber, and Gerwig serve as producers. The film will kick off with IMAX sneak previews on February 10, 2027, before opening wide in theaters on February 12, 2027, and streaming globally on Netflix on April 2.
