The Pope’s Exorcist 2 Finally Gets an Encouraging Update From Russell Crowe

The Pope’s Exorcist 2 has received a promising update from Russell Crowe, who played the title role in the original movie. Crowe discussed his interest in returning for a sequel to the 2023 supernatural horror hit in a recent interview.

Speaking with ScreenRant while promoting Unabomber, Crowe addressed the possibility of returning as Father Gabriele Amorth. The 62-year-old explained that his hesitation toward sequels has changed over the years. “I’m not as closed to it now as I was,” Crowe said.

The New Zealand actor revealed that he has been approached about multiple sequels for characters he has played, including Amorth. He said the character has plenty of material left to explore after the first movie and expressed interest in returning to the role.

“There are certain characters where I’ve been approached about a sequel, like Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist. They want to do another one of those,” Crowe said of The Pope’s Exorcist 2.

“That’s such a rich character who wrote 12 books about his experiences, and we’ve only just scratched the surface. So that would be interesting to do.”

What happened in the first The Pope’s Exorcist movie?

Released in 2023, the movie was inspired by the real-life files and writings of Father Gabriele Amorth.

The movie sees the Vatican exorcist Father Amorth travel to Spain after a young boy named Henry is seemingly possessed by the demon Asmodeus. To save him, Amorth teams up with a local priest to investigate the history of the location.

They uncover a conspiracy involving a former Spanish leader who committed historic atrocities under the demon’s influence. When Asmodeus attempts to possess Amorth, he overcomes his guilt, learns the demon’s name, and casts it out, saving Henry and his family.

A sequel was officially greenlit in 2024 after producer Jeff Katz announced that the project was moving forward. While official plot details, additional cast members, and a premiere date remain unconfirmed, Crowe’s continued enthusiasm offers a promising sign for the franchise.
