Sense and Sensibility Reviews & RT Scores Reveal How Movie Compares to Kate Winslet’s Classic

The first reviews for Georgia Oakley‘s Sense and Sensibility are in, with many critics praising the film. The upcoming film is the latest adaptation of Jane Austen‘s debut novel, which was first published in 1811. Some critics have compared the new film with Ang Lee’s 1995 adaptation starring Kate Winslet.

At the time of writing, Sense and Sensibility has scored 80% on Rotten Tomatoes with 10 reviews. Variety‘s review was positive, calling the grounded drama “oddly safe.” The review also praises Frank Dillane’s performance, noting that he’s a standout among the cast.

Elsewhere, The Wrap‘s review called it an “earthy interpretation” of the novel. The reviewer described the film as “earthy and humorous way, intensely riveting, which is also as it should be.” However, not all critics are fans of the new Jane Austen adaptation.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s review notes that the “emphasis on naturalism perhaps removes some of the emotional barriers for young contemporary audiences,” adding that the cinematography gives it a “low-energy feel and a drab look.”

How Georgia Oakley’s version differs from Ang Lee’s acclaimed adaptation

Oakley’s adaptation, as the reviews have noted, puts a more naturalistic spin on the source material. The film presents the story in a grounded style, moving away from the more traditional period-drama aesthetic of previous adaptations. While Lee’s film had Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet as the Dashwood sisters, the new film has Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles take on the iconic roles.

This year’s Sense and Sensibility is directed by Oakley from a screenplay by Diana Reid. Besides Edgar-Jones and Creed-Miles, the film stars Caitríona Balfe, Frank Dillane, Herbert Nordrum, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, George MacKay, and Fiona Shaw. It is produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title Films, who are joined by India Flint of November Pictures and Jo Wallett. Thea Paulett and Angela Moneke serve as executive producers.

Sense and Sensibility will release in theaters on October 16, 2026, three weeks after its UK premiere.
