World War Z 2 Gets Huge Update as Brad Pitt Zombie Sequel Movie Taps Oscar-Winning Director
Brad Pitt is coming back for the highly anticipated World War Z 2, and the sequel has found its director. Oscar-winning filmmaker Edward Berger has joined the long-delayed zombie movie, getting the project moving again.
Paramount has closed deals with Pitt and Berger for the sequel. Dennis Kelly will write the screenplay, while Pitt, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner will produce through Plan B Entertainment.
Berger will also executive produce the film. The project reunites him with Pitt after recently working together on A24 and Scott Free’s The Riders.
Pitt reportedly began discussing the sequel with Berger during that production. By the end of production, Berger was on board, and Paramount finalized deals with both of them in recent weeks. Plot details remain under wraps, so the story details have not been revealed.
What else do we know about World War Z 2?
World War Z 2 will follow the 2013 film, which starred Pitt as former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane. The original movie was directed by Marc Forster and adapted from Max Brooks’ bestselling 2006 novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War.
The first movie became a very successful release for Paramount. It earned around $540 million globally, including more than $202.36 million domestically.
Pitt has reportedly wanted a sequel for more than a decade. Earlier plans called for David Fincher to direct, but that version eventually stalled due to budget concerns. A completed script had previously been developed, with J.A. Bayona also attached to direct the sequel at one stage.
The sequel later gained renewed attention after Paramount executives Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg identified it as a priority. Skydance founder David Ellison also supported moving the project forward.
As of now, Paramount has not announced a release date for World War Z 2. The sequel now has Pitt as its returning star, with Berger set to direct.
