An I Am Legend 2 update gives dog lovers one less thing to worry about in the horror sequel. Reportedly, the upcoming movie is still in development, with Will Smith set to reprise his role as Robert Neville. Akiva Goldsman is writing while Steven Caple Jr. is directing the sequel. Additionally, Michael B. Jordan is expected to star in and co-produce the film.

In an interview with Radio Times, Goldsman discussed the status of I Am Legend 2. He admitted that the project has faced “a series of obstacles,” but the team is working on it. Goldsman said, “We’re pressing on. We’re trying. We’re doing everything we can to get it made.” He also confirmed that the sequel will not kill any dogs and said, “I fear that I would not survive the backlash should we kill another dog.”

I Am Legend 2 will reportedly use the alternate ending of the last movie as its starting point. In the theatrical ending, Neville sacrifices himself while helping other survivors escape. The alternate version, included on the film’s DVD release, shows Neville surviving after fending off an attack by the infected. The sequel will reportedly use that version as canon.

I Am Legend 2 does not have a release date yet, but Goldsman’s latest comments confirm that development is continuing despite the delays. More importantly for Sam’s fans, the writer has ruled out another canine death.

What happened to the dog in the first I Am Legend movie?

Sam was Neville’s German Shepherd in I Am Legend. After a virus wipes out most of humanity, Neville stays in New York City while searching for a cure. Sam remains with him and helps him navigate the deserted city.

Sam later becomes infected when the creatures attack her. Neville tries to protect her, but she eventually turns on him. With no other option, he kills Sam to stop her from attacking him.

Sam’s death became one of the film’s most emotional scenes. Goldsman previously revealed that audiences walked out during test screenings after seeing the dog die. He said the reaction was especially striking because the film had already shown the deaths of almost everyone on the planet.
