Groundbreaking New Movie Filmed by the Blind Is Now Playing in Theaters Today

A groundbreaking documentary filmed by blind and low-vision kids is now in theaters. The documentary follows blind and low-vision children as they take control of the cameras to document the event from their own perspectives.

Brailled It will begin screening in theaters on September 18. Going by the update, the project will open today in Laemmle Glendale, Los Angeles, CA. The list also mentions the other theaters that will be screening the special feature.

The synopsis of Brailled It reads, “Every year, the top under-18 Braille readers and writers from across the English-speaking world gather in Los Angeles to compete in the Braille Challenge. For one weekend, blind and low-vision kids are no longer the minority in the room. They make new friends, face off against old rivals, and chase a rare chance to be recognized not for their disability, but for their skill.”

How blind and low-vision kids helped tell their own story

During the filming of Brailled It, the blind and low-vision children themselves were given cameras to document the competition. Instead of having professional filmmakers control everything, the creators decided to capture the actions and events from the point of view of the blind and low-vision kids.

While the footage captured by them may not turn out to be perfect, the filmmakers aimed to document the competition from a real point of view. The film also places accessibility and audio description at its core, allowing blind and low-vision audiences to experience the documentary.

Brailled It is directed by Salome Cummins, Isaiah Gauthier, Christopher Morgan, and David Grabias. Brendon Schulze is contributing as the co-director. Anne Edgar is among the film’s producers.
