Brad Pitt & David Ayer Battled Over Heart of the Beast’s Final Cut — Report

Brad Pitt and David Ayer clashed over the final cut of their survival thriller Heart of the Beast. According to an insider report, the actor and director reportedly prepared separate cuts of the film, with Paramount stepping in to resolve the conflict.

In a new report by Puck’s Matthew Belloni, it was stated that the F1 star and the Suicide Squad director disagreed over the tone of the survival thriller. This led the two to create their own separate cuts. However, Ayer’s broader cut tested better, while Pitt’s version gained support from producers/spouses Damien Chazelle and Olivia Hamilton.

It was furthermore reported that Paramount studio chiefs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein stepped in to resolve the conflict by offering more post-production time. Ultimately, Ayer’s version was retained, with some of Pitt’s suggestions incorporated.

How Brad Pitt and David Ayer’s competing visions shaped Heart of the Beast

The post-production of Heart of the Beast was extended due to differing and competing creative approaches between the lead actor and the director, which ultimately shaped the movie’s narrative.

Ayer, known for helming movies like Harsh Times, End of Watch, and Bright, approached the survival thriller with the gritty style associated with much of his work. On the other hand, Pitt is known for making cuts to the movie’s storyline for greater psychological impact, as in Ad Astra and World War Z.

The movie marks the second project collaboration between Ayer and Pitt, after Fury. Despite their different approaches to the tone, in an earlier interview with Polygon, Ayer revealed that they “were both ready to go on emotionally.” The director added, “It’s a film about endurance, but he [Pitt] demonstrated immense endurance in the filmmaking process.”

Heart of the Beast is written by Cameron Alexander. Besides Pitt, the ensemble also includes Uber, J.K. Simmons, and Anna Lambe.

The official synopsis reads, “After surviving a plane crash, a former special forces soldier finds himself trapped in the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness with his combat dog. Together, they battle the elements and other animals in a harsh landscape that would likely kill any other man or dog.”

Heart of the Beast will be released in theaters on September 25, 2026.
