Unexpected Thriller Just Beat Taraji P. Henson’s Netflix Sequel for No. 1 Streaming Spot
Netflix’s latest streaming surprise has pushed an established franchise sequel out of the top spot in the U.S. The thriller has climbed above Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again?, giving a much smaller title an unexpected moment in the spotlight.
The Seemingly Perfect Family is Netflix’s new no. 1
FlixPatrol‘s Sept. 17 Netflix rankings listed The Seemingly Perfect Family as the most popular movie in the United States, beating Why Did I Get Married Again? That puts the new thriller ahead of Taraji P. Henson’s latest franchise entry in the U.S. market, even though Perry’s sequel remains a major Netflix performer globally.
The film follows 18-year-old Lexi after she leaves the foster care system and lies her way into an au pair position. What looks like a dream household quickly turns sour when she discovers disturbing secrets inside the family. Rylee Reagan leads the cast alongside Sarah Nicklin, Violet SinClair, Sharonne Lanier, Patric Palkens, Bourke Floyd and Anna Morgan Neugent. Lisa France directed the movie.
The movie’s streaming performance is gaining attention even as viewers remain divided. IMDb currently places it at 4.9/10. On Rotten Tomatoes, fewer than 50 audience ratings have been submitted, leaving the Popcornmeter without an official score for now.
The early reactions are all over the map. Some viewers enjoyed the mystery and felt the screenplay kept the story moving, while others tore into the performances and dismissed the plot as ridiculous. Many fans also called it a watchable thriller despite its shortcomings.
That reception contrasts with the stronger streaming pull of Why Did I Get Married Again? The movie brings Tyler Perry, Henson and Jill Scott back together, with the returning couples heading to a destination wedding centered on Marcus and Angela’s daughter. The movie currently enjoys the 5.4/10 rating on IMDb, while on Rotten Tomatoes it holds a 43% critics score and 51% audience score.
