Ian McKellen’s Gandalf gets first look from Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum
Ian McKellen’s first look as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum has surfaced online. A behind-the-scenes video shared by Tolkien Universe on X shows the actor fully suited up in costume. McKellen appears with his signature long gray beard and hair after finishing hair and makeup.
The short clip confirms that filming for the movie is currently ongoing. McKellen first played Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001. He then returned for The Two Towers, The Return of the King, and later The Hobbit trilogy. The Hunt for Gollum marks Gandalf’s first big-screen appearance in over a decade.
Andy Serkis directs the film and reprises his role as Gollum, also known as Smeagol. Production officially began earlier this year, with Warner Bros. releasing a behind-the-scenes video. That video featured Serkis in a motion-capture suit filming in c.
McKellen and Serkis are not the only returning cast members for the project. Elijah Wood returns as Frodo Baggins, while Lee Pace will once again portray Thranduil. Several newcomers also join the ensemble for this latest Middle-earth adventure.
Jamie Dornan will play Strider, a younger version of Aragorn originally portrayed by Viggo Mortensen. Leo Woodall stars as a new character named Halvard. Kate Winslet joins the cast as Marigol. Arty Papageorgiou, Phoebe Gittins, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens wrote the screenplay.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum arrives in theaters on December 17, 2027.
